Intro to Maker Education Goes Live

In the fall of 2020, 1st Maker Space launched the Maker Manager Program. The Maker Manager Program trains and empowers educators to lead the makerspace program at their building and inspire the maker mindset throughout the district and community that they work within. This course is on its 3rd cohort this Fall and has awarded over twenty educators with the Maker Manager Certification to date.

While developing the Maker Manager Program, the 1st Maker Space team heard from countless teachers and principals about the need for a professional development experience for classroom teachers that want to use the makerspace or STEM lab but are not the main facilitator of that space. Our “Introduction to Maker Education” course is a direct response to this need.

Introduction to Maker Education is an asynchronous, online course that has eight main units and is completely self-paced. This format gives educators the flexibility to add maker education to their curriculum at their convenience. Throughout the course, educators are challenged to think of teaching and learning in a way that promotes hands-on, learner-directed educational experiences and nurtures the maker mindset.

Maker education is extremely powerful and impactful for students and educators alike. For the educator, it brings back joy to the classroom through hands-on learning, creativity and student engagement. For students, hands-on learning leads to better academic outcomes and gives students agency and hope (Bower, et. Al., 2018).
