Greg Roach, the Superintendent at Daleville Community Schools, was familiar with the concept of makerspaces from his previous experience as a principal. Mr. Roach was able to see first-hand how multiple curricular areas, from Engineering to Family and Consumer Sciences, found value in the makerspace to bring content to life through hands-on projects. Mr. Roach is brining the joy of hands-on learning to Daleville through a STEM Lab at Daleville Elementary and a makerspace at Daleville Jr./Sr. High School.
Daleville Jr./Sr. High School desired to create a makerspace where students in grades 7-12 could work on hands-on projects, including robotics, laser cutting, and 3D printing. They were interested in having two zones within the makerspace: a zone for innovation and design thinking and a zone for making. The Magnetic Maker Tables from 1st Maker Space is a distinct zone for working with tools in the makerspace called the “Build Zone”. The HON Snap Whiteboard tables are located in the “Innovation Zone” and are ideal for brainstorming and collaboration. Often, student groups need different spaces for different phases of any given project, and these two zones within the makerspace give it the ultimate flexibility for a broader range of STEM and Maker projects. The Bronco Makerspace hopes to attract and retain students to Daleville Jr./Sr. High School who are passionate about hands-on learning and STEM.
