Exploring the Moon Phases with the Glowforge Laser Cutter and Engraver

In this video, we demonstrate the Glowforge Laser Cutter Engraver. The Glowforge, a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) laser cutter and engraver has revolutionized digital fabrication in educational settings. This cutting-edge tool enables students of all ages to unleash their creativity, transforming imaginative ideas into tangible works of art with remarkable precision and detail. By harnessing advanced laser technology, the Glowforge laser cutter allows young learners to carve and engrave various materials, such as wood, acrylic, leather, and even certain metals, providing them with a virtually limitless canvas for creative exploration.

The device's user-friendly software suite simplifies turning digital projects into physical masterpieces. This seamless integration fosters creativity and helps students develop essential technical skills. Furthermore, the sleek and compact design of the Glowforge laser cutter makes it a perfect addition to any classroom or makerspace, inspiring a new generation of innovators and creators.

1st Makerspace has created an in-depth curriculum lesson on the moon phases where students in grades 5-6 will create a moon phase puzzle using a Glowforge laser cutter to understand the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, predict phases in the lunar cycle, and explain why the moon appears to change shape. The lesson uses wood glue, black markers, and moon phase pictures. Students can construct a lunar cycle model, predict phases utilizing a calendar, and demonstrate an understanding of why the moon has degrees. The lesson includes extension activities and cross-curricular connections to math, history, and language arts.

It can be accessed here after creating a free curriculum account with 1st Maker Space.
